Wintergreen Woods is a 23-acre wet forest on 925 North. Acquired through a grant from the Indiana Heritage Trust it is a dedicated State Nature Preserve because of its rare treasury of trees, plants, and wildlife habitat.
Also maintained as a Classified Wildlife Habitat, the property is maintained as a natural area. It is known to be home to wintergreen and other more northerly flora, pileated woodpeckers and song birds, deer, and other wildlife. A trail now provides limited access for hikers. Ridgway Wetland is a 59.5 acre preserve located off Boyd Blvd. in LaPorte. This wetland is a remnant of original Ridgway Lake that covered much of the east side of LaPorte. Ridgway Wetland contains 2 ponds, extensive wet areas and mature forest at its eastern border.
This preserve provides important open space on the fast developing east side of LaPorte. The ponds are important local areas for migrating ducks and shorebirds. Birds observed at the ponds include green-wing teal, mallard, solitary sandpiper, great blue heron and killdeer. The mudflats associated with these ponds are especially important for the shorebirds, since this type of habitat is unusual in LaPorte County. The wetland also serves to act as a natural purifier for surface water in LaPorte, and helps to recharge ground water. Future plans for the area include a walking trail along the ponds for wildlife viewing.
